About JTHAR
Established in 2007, Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) is an artist-centric nonprofit residency that awards an international community of artists the gifts of time and space amidst the extraordinary natural beauty of Joshua Tree National Park. Seven week residencies include scholarship funds, living accommodations, and studio space designed to accommodate a broad range of artistic activity and open studio events. JTHAR respects the critical role artists play in our society, and it aims to foster creativity, trust, courage, diversity and acceptance by facilitating opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local community. JTHAR establishes space for inspiration to happen, so artists can do the work of innovating, changing the cultural landscape and generating a fresh look at the way we connect to each other and to the world.
When I think of my time in the desert, the first thing I remember is the color of the sky. It was pink and blue at twilight, and my eye followed the gradient from the hills to the constellations of stars. The quietude is what allowed me to finish the revision of my first novel, but what made it truly special was the community of artists and writers that the residency has brought together over the years. I am so lucky to be welcomed into such a generous and talented circle.

My time at the residency was both grounding and expansive. The desert revealed itself as a place that is quiet yet intense - harsh, gentle, and beautiful all at once. The environment deeply influenced my approach to color, supporting my ongoing research that was already moving toward a more restrained, earthy palette. I leave with a deeper understanding of my practice and a lasting connection to this landscape and the people I shared it with. After leaving, I already feel a longing to return to this environment. It is a truly inspiring place and I felt very welcome by the people I met there.

I think back very fondly to my time at JTHAR; it was one of the most profound residency experiences I have ever enjoyed, and it was there that I developed a new sculptural direction in my work that has led to a wide variety of further opportunities in the years since then. I can't picture my creative history without that pivotal moment of quiet, solitude and clarity that JTHAR offered. I will remember my time there forever.

I am immensely grateful for my time at JTHAR. The program provides a gateway to an incredibly inspiring landscape while being embedded with an engaged and supportive community. From when I first arrived, to my last day, I felt valued and bolstered to a degree that far exceeded expectations. Personal connections coupled with an impressively outfitted living/working space made this bespoke residency truly special. The seven weeks of uninterrupted focused time allowed for the ample experimentation and iteration necessary for locating new possibilities in my creative research.
