We had the good fortune of connecting with Frederick Fulmer / James Berg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frederick / James, how does your business help the community?
Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency provides artists with a studio and living space and monetary stipend to encourage the creation of new works of art. JTHAR is located in Joshua Tree, ca. next to the National Park which presents the opportunity to learn about the Mojave Desert and it ecology.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Established in 2007, Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) is an artist-centric nonprofit residency that awards an international community of artists the gifts of time and space amidst the extraordinary natural beauty of Joshua Tree National Park. Seven week residencies include scholarship funds, living accommodations, and studio space designed to accommodate a broad range of artistic activity and open studio events.

On the level, raised by four steps, there is a structure with a small tower. The building exudes something sublime, although it is little more than a wooden shed. Manifestation utilizes old products destined for the landfill to create a ghostly apparition of consumerism. The assembled form of the products is characterized by growth. Mimicking the forested landscape it occupies, positions the sculpture both as nature and in opposition to nature. The sculpture plays with the conception of value with the ultimate transmutation of trash to art, creating a counter narrative to the typical cycle of production - consumption - waste.

Tell them to pack their oils and acrylics. One of five private homes set on rolling acreage next to Joshua Tree National Park, this modern cabin includes an artist’s fantasy space. A breezeway separates the living quarters from a 900-square-foot working studio.

No small afterthought, it is equipped with work tables, a sink, movable walls, custom lighting, plus a bathroom and kitchen. Panoramic views soothe the soul, as do yoga, Pilates, and massage by appointment. Rentals support the Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency program.
